In 1987, Steven Maymuru, from Yirrkala near Nhulunbuy, was seriously injured as a pedestrian. At 28, he sustained spinal injuries that resulted in quadriplegia. Before his accident, Steven was a cultural dancer who performed both interstate and internationally, including in Paris. His inability to dance and participate in family and cultural activities in Yirrkala is what he misses the most. Media Heads worked closely with MACC in the NT to enable Steven to share his story to raise awareness about the risks associated with walking on roads, especially after drinking.
